Why Your Gut Could Be Behind Your Skin Issues in Perimenopause

Did you know your skin might be trying to tell you something about your gut health?

It's not something most women hear from their dermatologist, but the connection between gut health and skin health is very real! It even has a name: the gut-skin axis.

In perimenopause, shifting hormones already make skin more reactive and prone to breakouts.

But when gut health is also a factor, those skin issues can become harder to manage no matter what you try.

Here's why:

The gut microbiome. Changes in your gut microbiome have been directly linked to skin conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis. When the balance of bacteria in your gut is off, it often shows up on your skin.

Food sensitivities. Gluten and other food sensitivities can trigger skin rashes and eczema by driving inflammation in the gut and disrupting immune function. The skin reaction is real, but the root cause is happening deeper.

Inflammation. When chronic inflammation occurs in the gut, it can lead to increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut), which allows inflammatory signals to travel through the body and show up in places you wouldn't expect — including your skin.

The typical approach to skin issues is to treat them from the outside in, with topical creams, serums, and prescriptions. And sometimes those things help. But if the gut is driving the problem, external solutions only go so far!

Healing from the inside out is a very different approach, and it's one that can create changes that topical products simply can't.
