Why Your Gut Holds the Key to Hormone Harmony in Perimenopause

Do you ever feel like you're playing a hormone balancing act?

If you've been struggling with mood swings, weight gain around the middle, heavy or irregular periods, breast tenderness, or that general sense of feeling unraveled, it might be time to look at your gut.

Here's the thing most women don't know: your hormones don't just need to be produced properly. They also need to be eliminated properly. And your gut plays a huge role in that second part!

Here's how it works:

When your body is done using the hormone estrogen, it gets packaged up in the liver and sent to the gut to be cleared out of your body. Clean, tidy, done.

Except...there's an enzyme living in your intestines called beta-glucuronidase. When this enzyme is overactive (which happens when your gut microbiome is out of balance), it essentially unwraps that packaged estrogen and releases it back into your bloodstream.

So instead of eliminating it, your body reabsorbs it.

This is one of the key drivers of estrogen dominance, a state where estrogen is too high relative to progesterone. This can show up as:

  • Weight gain, especially around the hips and belly
  • Mood swings and anxiety
  • Heavy, painful, or irregular periods
  • Bloating and water retention
  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Worsening perimenopause symptoms

If you want to address estrogen dominance, you need to start with your gut. If your gut isn't working properly, you're essentially trying to fix a leaky faucet without turning off the water first!

As a 40+ Hormone Health Pharmacist, the gut is one of the first places I look. It's not always the most obvious starting point, but it's often the most powerful one. 💚
